Safe Sex and STIs

Avoiding passing on HIV to our partners if they are HIV-negative or if we don’t know their HIV-status is always going to be an important issue for those of us with HIV. Most of us will know a lot about safe sex already, but, in the sections below we cover the safe sex basics.

Unfortunately, safe sex won’t always prevent sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Some STIs can cause serious problems. The sections below have information about STIs symptoms, transmission, prevention and testing.

There is also information about post-exposure prophylaxis, and the question of how viral load levels change the likelihood of transmitting HIV to others.
