“For years I didn’t use condoms with other positive guys. Then I got syphilis. I still have unprotected sex with a couple of positive fuckbuddies, but I always use condoms with casual shags now.”

“We’d been having sex for about a month when I started hinting about a few things I was into, like fisting and a bit of mild SM. He was definitely NOT into them and labelled them as ‘not safe’. In terms of HIV transmission they were safer than some of the things we’d already done. Some men tend to rate safety based on prejudice rather than facts.”

An overview of safe sex

The meaning of safe sex for HIV positive guys has expanded significantly in recent years to include a number some strategies that do not rely on condoms. Condoms remain the most well known and most widely used safe sex strategy (and offer protection from most STIs). But other HIV prevention strategies include:

Undetectable viral – when the man living with HIV is on effective antiretroviral therapy, has had a sustained undetectable viral load (UVL) for at least six months and is free from sexually transmissible infections (STIs).

Serosorting – only having sex with other HIV positive guys.

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) – the HIV negative partner takes an HIV prevention drug call Truvada.
